Marthur Hurley Kalil, 84, of Alexandria, NH, passed away on October 9, 2023. She was born on February 8, 1939, in Nashua, NH, to Mary O'Leary Hurley and Arthur Paul Hurley.
Marthur was a woman of intellect and wit, known for her sharp tongue and her drive for good in her community. Much of her career was in writing and editing, as she made significant contributions to various publications. She served as the Editor of the local NOW newsletter in Lexington, MA in the 70s, and later became the Director of Public Relations for the Buckingham Browne and Nichols School in the 1980s. Marthur also worked as an early tech writer for the Polaroid Corporation in the 90s.
Marthur's educational background included attending Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, NY, and graduating with an BA in Biology/Zoology from Wellesley College in 1960.
Outside of her professional life, Marthur had a passion for community involvement. A long-time elected representative to Lexington’s Town Meeting, she also held board positions with Lexington’s NOW chapter, the Mount Auburn Auxiliary in Cambridge, MA, and at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School as President of the Parent’s Association. After moving from Massachusetts to New Hampshire, Marthur served as a volunteer and board member of the Bristol Community Services and the Minot-Sleeper Library in Bristol.
Beyond her family, Marthur’s greatest love and source of solace was the natural beauty of Newfound Lake, Mt. Cardigan, and the Fowler River. Having spent summers at Camp Wulamat on Newfound since age 6, she happily retired to the area in 1996 to what she fondly called “The Red House.”
Marthur was a woman of faith and was an active member of St. Brigid Parish in Lexington and Holy Trinity Parish of Plymouth-Bristol, teaching Religion for over 30 years.
A Mass will be said in Marthur's memory on Thursday, November 9th, at 8:00 am at Our Lady of Grace Chapel, located at 2 West Shore Rd, Bristol, NH 03222.
Marthur is survived by her loving husband, Charles Jeffrey Kalil, her sister, Ruthann Hurley Vihon of Western Springs, IL, her son, Jeffrey Ryan Kalil of Asheville, NC, and her daughter, Mary Kalil Hamawy of Brooklyn, NY, as well as her five grandchildren: Murphy, Cannoy, Risher, Keefe, and Marta (Tavi).
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bristol Community Services at 21 Pleasant St, Bristol, NH 03222 or Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health at 101 Boulder Point Drive, Ste 3, Plymouth, NH 03264.
Marthur Hurley Kalil (“Ooma” to her family) will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of intelligence, wit, and community involvement will continue to inspire others.
